The mountain climbing season is finally here! Once again, many hikers will set their sights on Mt. Hakuba, also known as Mt. Shirouma, starting their journey from the Sarukura Trailhead.
However, please note that some access rules have changed for the 2025 season.
Be sure to check the latest information so you can begin your hike with confidence and peace of mind.
No Private Car Access to Sarukura — Use Designated Parking Areas in Happo
Private vehicles are not allowed to drive up to Sarukura.
During this summer season, the Sarukura parking area will not be available for private vehicles. If you're planning a hike, please use one of the free parking lots listed below. All locations can be found easily on Google Maps.
- Happo Parking Lot No. 3
- Happo Parking Lot No. 5
- Lawson Hakuba Happo Store East side parking lot (special)
All of these parking locations are conveniently located near central Hakuba Village. If you’re using the reserved shuttle bus, the Happo Bus Terminal is the closest boarding point.
Ride with Peace of Mind – Shuttle Bus Schedule & Fare Information
The shuttle bus now requires advance reservations. For the 2025 season, it will operate from July 12th to October 13th.
The bus to the Sarukura Trailhead requires an advance reservation.
By booking in advance, you can ensure a smooth and stress-free start to your hike on the day of departure.
- Operation period: July 12th (Saturday) to October 13th (Monday)
- One-way fare: 2,000 yen
- Travel Time: Approximately 30 minutes
- Stops: Hakuba Station, Happo Bus Terminal, Sarukura Trailhead
Bus reservations can be made via Official Website, starting one month before your travel date. Seats may fill up quickly closer to the day, so early booking is highly recommended. Accepted payment methods include credit card, PayPay, and d-Barai (NTT Docomo Pay).

Taxis Are a Great Option Too|Easy Access with Uber


If you're traveling in a group of 3 to 4 people, taking a taxi is both cost-effective and convenient!
Since private cars can't access the Sarukura Trailhead this year, taking a taxi is a highly recommended option.
From the Hakuba Station area, it takes about 20 to 25 minutes by taxi, with a fare of around ¥5,000. If you're sharing the ride with 3 or 4 people, it's a very cost-effective choice.
You can also use the Uber app to request a ride within the Hakuba area. Advance reservations and cashless payment options are available, making your trip to the trailhead much less stressful. Make Use of Your Hotel’s Shuttle Service
Some accommodations offer shuttle service to the Sarukura Trailhead for guests staying the night before their hike. Be sure to check when making your reservation, and take advantage of the service if it’s available. Many lodgings are happy to arrange early-morning departures, helping you start your trek with peace of mind.
Direct Access from Tokyo – The “Daily Alpen-Go” Night Bus Is a Great Option
The “Daily Alpen-Go” night bus offers direct access from Tokyo to the Sarukura Trailhead. Departing from Takebashi and Shinjuku the night before, the bus arrives at Sarukura early the next morning—perfect for starting your hike. Discounted round-trip tickets and combination plans with our mountain lodges are also available. Please check the official bus company website below for departure times and reservations.


No Problem If You Descend via Tsugaike – Flexible Route Options Available


The traverse route that starts at Sarukura and descends via Tsugaike is a popular choice among hikers. Even in this case, there’s no need to worry—you can easily return to Happo from Tsugaike by bus or taxi. With reliable transportation options available, you can plan a flexible route with different start and end points.
Access to the Sarukura Trailhead|No More Walking Section
As of July 2025, 7, the road construction near the Sarukura Trailhead has been fully completed. Thanks to this, all vehicles—including buses, taxis, and accommodation shuttle services—can now access the Sarukura Trailhead directly.
Previously, due to road surface damage, vehicles could only go up to 1.2 km before the trailhead, requiring all hikers to walk the final section on foot. Now, that is no longer necessary, and you can comfortably reach the trailhead by vehicle.

Parking private vehicles near the Sarukura Trailhead is strictly prohibited.
Illegally parked cars may obstruct buses and emergency vehicles, and may be subject to traffic violations.
